Alphabetical synthesis is a process for producing synthetic speech.

It was developed in the late 1950s by researchers at Bell Laboratories, who discovered that speech could be generated by a computer using a small vocabulary of letter sounds.

An alphabetical machine takes that concept to the extreme, using one letter symbol to represent one phoneme or vowel sound. This makes possible a very compact system that doesn’t need to store any other information.
